Media Release: TBDSSAB receives $2.96 million from CMHC Affordable Housing Fund

August 1, 2024 – The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB) is receiving $2.96 million in federal funding toward capital repairs.

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, MP for Thunder Bay Superior North, and Hon. Marcus Powlowski, MP for Thunder Bay Rainy River, were joined by media today in Thunder Bay to announce projects funded through the CMHC’s Affordable Housing Fund on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

Through the Affordable Housing Fund, TBDSSAB will receive a total of $2,961,266 for capital repairs to be completed over three years. The Affordable Housing Fund (formerly the National Housing Co-Investment Fund) is a federal program through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) that provides capital for new affordable housing and the renovation and repair of existing affordable and community housing.

“Our Board is grateful to the federal government and CMHC for providing this funding to TBDSSAB,” says TBDSSAB Chair Brian Hamilton. “Having funding for capital projects will help us increase cost-effectiveness, safety and comfort, and ultimately help us look ahead to what will keep these buildings in livable condition for many years to come.”

“This funding is important for the repair and maintenance of existing affordable housing units,” says TBDSSAB CEO Bill Bradica. “Although we are actively working on and advocating for new affordable housing developments and portable benefits, the sustainability of our housing system also requires ongoing investment in the non-market housing that already exists.”

This funding will be used to make capital improvements to current affordable housing properties across the District of Thunder Bay, affecting over 2,000 units across 30 properties. Highlights of the planned upgrades for this year include:

  • Manion Court will receive new mechanical systems and a phased window replacement to reduce electrical/gas costs and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Elizabeth Court will undergo multi-year renovations to their entrance, common room, and mechanical systems to improve energy efficiency, safety, and accessibility.
  • Phased replacement of interior and exterior doors across various properties, including a combined 131 patio doors at Matthews Court and Academy/Trillium Court, to improve energy efficiency and safety.
  • Accessibility enhancements at various properties including upgrades to interior railing systems, installation of ramps, and modification to improve current accessible spaces.
